Headlines at a Glance infographic
Identifying the market leaders across five continents.

This episode deepens the regional analysis of the global grocery retail landscape by highlighting the retailers that define their respective regional landscapes, utilizing FY24 revenue share data.

Note: All regional data is based on the head office location of the top 100 retailers.

North America and Europe

Top 5 Retailers by revenue (FY24)
North America: top 5 retailers by revenue (FY24)

North America: Walmart continues to dominate North American grocery retail revenues at over 40% share, supported by its ongoing global share gain of the top 100 retailers which rose by 0.65 percentage points in FY24. The top 4 US retailers are also the number 1 retailer in their retail format (Retail Formats will be discussed in a later episode) and demonstrates the strength of US retail in 4 of the 6 grocery retail formats (Multi-format, Warehouse Clubs, Supermarkets, Hypermarkets).

Europe: top 5 retailers by revenue (FY24)

Europe: European retailer revenues are considerably less concentrated than North America, with regional revenues split across 48 top 100 retailers in Europe compared to 24 in North America, despite fairly similar revenue shares of the top 100 (41.3% vs 46% respectively). Discount retailers Schwarz Group and Aldi are the leading European head-quartered retailers with a combined 20% revenue share. Three Supermarket and Multi-format retailers together account for a further 18% of European revenues.

Asia Pacific, Latam, and Africa & Middle East

Top 5 Retailers by revenue (FY24)
Asia Pacific: top 5 retailers by revenue (FY24)

Asia Pacific: Australian retailers Woolworths and Coles have a similar combined revenue share to Seven & I, and together these 3 retailers account for 45% of the region’s revenues. Whilst the region’s share of the top 100 grocery retailers is just under 10%, Asia Pacific (APAC) is well represented in the top 100 with a total of 19 retailers, almost as many as the United States, but with a much lower average revenue per retailer.

Latin America: top 5 retailers by revenue (FY24)

Latin America: Both Latam (1.9%) and Africa & Middle East (1.1%) have much smaller revenue shares of the top 100 grocery retailers than the other 3 regions, and correspondingly smaller average retailer revenues. However, retailer shares in both these 2 smaller regions are much more evenly segmented. Five Latam retailers are represented in the top 100 global grocery retailers with 3 from Mexico, 1 from Chile and 1 from Brazil.

Africa & Middle East: top 5 retailers by revenue (FY24)

Africa & Middle East: Africa & Middle East retailer share profile is distributed similarly to Latam, except with four retailers being represented (3 from South Africa and 1 from UAE). Bim Birlesik in Turkey could be allocated to AME or Europe regions, but we have allocated the retailer to the Europe region given this is a more typical allocation in retail economics terms and within consumer goods companies.
